First post! I’ve lived in Europe for the past year; France for the past nine months. First solo living situation, first time since high school without substantial paychecks, first time coming to a place where the only guaranteed person I’d spend time with was a kid. Life as an au pair is just a strange way to live. I’m heavily dependent on my host family for groceries and pocket money but yet I have my own place. It’s also strange spending almost all of my free time with a six-year-old but at the same time it’s cool to have a little brother of sorts. I get to introduce him to music (his current favorite songs being I want you back -The Jackson 5 and Natural -The Driver Era), teach him new words, and be a part of him growing up. This is not to say that I enjoy myself all the time. There’s a 17 year age difference between me and my host brother (the fact that I’m old enough to theoretically be his mom is absolutely terrifying) and the difference between us is quite obvious to me when we attempt to play football, or when he doesn’t see the correlation between his actions and consequences. Growing up, I only had an older sister and I don’t like to imagine myself as anything other than a sweet, angelic younger sister but this can act as my formal apology for the times I’m sure I annoyed my sister (v apologetic Taylor).
