New York State of Mind

I just spent the first weekend of the year in a place completely new to me, New York. My roommate joined me on a trip to visit a friend from high school…Who I’ve known for *gulp* 10 years. We took the bus up 24 hours after celebrating the new year and started our trip officially at 8 am in Chinatown. I’m so lucky to feel such love in my friendships. Growing up, I felt discomfort in some relationships and, as an adult, I’ve worked to ensure I have no friendships that make me question myself. I do believe my childhood helped to develop a clear sense of self, and therapy as an adult has definitely cemented what are none-negotiable for me. I just love being able to fully be myself; laugh loud, follow random though trains, sit in silence, just discover more about the world with people I respect and value. My friends all add to my life and this trip to NY this weekend reaffirmed that. Bryan, Heather and I spent our time connecting through art, music, walking, and just experiencing the city together. One of the days, we went to MoMA and it was a moment that I acknowledged would not have happened without Heather being the catalyst. It helps too that both Heather and Bryan are such knowledgeable and artistic should that it opened my mind up to new lenses to view the art through. We explored an amazing retrospective on Ruth Asawa and see such intricate art. She explored various mediums throughout her career but the recurring theme was that the piece was all one. Whether it was paper or wire, she made one piece form a larger vision. After the museum, we met up with another friend of mine to grab dinner but somehow ended up going out. Not sure how that happened but it resulted in me being hungover for our last full day in NYC. We spent that day checking out PS1 before going to a THEATER to watch RESURRECTION. It was a confusing foreign film, but the confusion may have come from me falling asleep while watching…Not my best moment. After the film, we went back to Bryan’s to eat dinner with his roommate and watch Jury duty. After waking up on our final day, we went to grab coffee and then walked around Midtown in the time left before our train back home. overall, my first trip to nyc was great, i very much enjoyed being able to explore a new city and being surrounded by people that allow me to be myself so comfortably.

until next update!
