Natasha The Nanny No Longer

It’s officially been a year since I left job as a nanny! Time has flown. It was strange coming to terms with leaving the kids but, while I do miss them, I am still glad to have left. First of all, I’m going to commend myself for affording life as a server for a whole Year. I’m grateful to the people that I’ve met since entering a new space of work and how much growth I feel I’ve done, both personally and PROFESSIONALLY.

let me be the first to tell you, serving can be rough. I’ve found the team around you can make or break your shifts. and also the weather and heating/cooling system of the restaurant. A few lessons/opinions I want to share with readers.

  • if you’re bringing cake from outside the resto, please share with me and my friends (odds are we’re daydreaming about it)
  • patience is a virtue, especially when I’ve been triple sat and I’m working my way to you as fast as I can
  • to expand on the previous point, self-awareness is also a nice thing for guests to have. I’m happy to help but if you see a full resto, odds are there might be some wait times that are out of my control.
  • I like hearing please and thanks, I’m a human and manners are appreciated. (that means eye contact too)
  • (in a bakery setting) it’s normal (and good) for us to run out of things at EOD, I swear it’s not like we ate t all to spite you.
  • There’s a direct correlation between how picky you are and how much you should tip (more pIcky=More TIppy)
  • If you’re not gonna tip me, why are you even eating here?
  • anticipate the future, prep yourself as much as possible before the rush cause when it’s busy, it’s every man for themselves

Yes, I’m aware most of these are tip-centric but in Virginia, servers typically get paid less than $3/Hr because tips are supposed to make up for the wage so you not tipping me for the work I’m doing has it where I’m making Minimum Wage at the most. And the Averages are done weekly so one Really good day can get cancelled out by a bad day. This is coming from someone who once got tipped 3 pennies. Yes, Pennies. 3 pennies for a whole lotta work from some young people that visibly had backwards Priorities (they were wearing MAGA hats) WHat’s even more crazy is that I didn’t even give the guy three pennies in his change so he went out of his way to be evil. But, given how they presented, I wasn’t surprised. But being right about a person doesn’t pay the bills sadly.

One plus of all this serving work is that my memory has improved (At least I think so). And I’ve also made great friends.

this is your sign to quit your job if you’re unhappy for a prolonged period. life is too short to not enjoy where you spend the majority of your week.
